Located about 250 km from the Arctic Circle, Saariselka village, Lapland province, Finland is home to the Kakslauttanen Arctic resort, with glass tents simulating Eskimo igloos. Reporter Iris van den Broek of travel magazine IFLY Magazine had the opportunity to experience spending the night at this place.
When you check in, you will be guided to your room by the receptionist using a map. Guests can use a snowmobile to carry their luggage there easily, just push the scooter and slide without dragging their belongings on the snow. Iris thinks this is an exciting start.
The coldest temperature in winter here can drop below minus 30 degrees Celsius, however the rooms are equipped with double-layered glass panels that heat and insulate well, creating a comfortable environment of about 22 degrees Celsius inside. , a difference of up to 52 degrees Celsius compared to the outside.
Watching the Northern Lights is the most anticipated experience on the trip. “At first I saw a faint milky white band in the sky, but wasn’t sure if it was the aurora borealis or not. Then suddenly the entire sky turned neon blue. Continuous bands of light dancing, intertwining and changing shape. It’s an extremely beautiful sight,” said Iris.
“That day, the aurora lasted all night. Even when lying in bed, looking through the ceiling of the igloo, that whole magical scene still surrounded me, it was the best part of the trip” , She added.
To move and visit around, visitors will sit on a special sled. Husky dogs are responsible for pulling sleds for tourists through the snow-covered forest, this is a typical image of the Arctic regions.
Visitors can visit Sami village, a small village of nomadic tribes, to learn about their living environment and roam around on reindeer carts. The Sami people were the first inhabitants here. The village has only about 20 people and a herd of 140 reindeer. People still wear colorful traditional costumes and reindeer leather shoes.
In winter, trees are covered in a thick layer of ice, called “tykkylumi” in Finnish. The snow cover gives the landscape a different look. The hotel is located isolated in a deserted area, so it is suitable for exploring the wild nature of Lapland.
