Lionel Messi equaled the record previously held by golf’s greatest legend – Tiger Woods.
Lionel Messi – who is always famous for breaking and setting great milestones, has just set another record to equal the golf legend – Tiger Woods.
The former Barcelona star has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award for his first season with Inter Miami. This nomination marks the 8th time he has appeared here. The only other sportsman with this record is Tiger Woods.
Laureus shared the news on their official X account. The post contains:
“Special number 8! An incredible record for the number of nominations for the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year Award, currently held by two great players – Lionel Messi and Tiger Woods.”
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami won the 2023 Leagues Cup and was honored as the best player of the tournament. He joined the MLS club in the summer of the same year and was therefore unable to play his first full season in the US.
Erling Haaland – who had a great season and won the treble with Manchester City, was also nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award.
Other nominees include American runner Noah Lyles, Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic, Swedish-American runner Mondo Duplantis and Dutch-Belgian Formula One driver Max Verstappen .
Messi’s Inter Miami is currently third in MLS with 12 points after 8 matches. Leading team New York Red Bulls has 14 points after 7 matches. Although Philadelphia Union has the same points as Messi’s team, they are ranked second thanks to a higher goal difference and have two more matches to play.
