Kim Kardashian came under fire on Tuesday after her fans accused her of trying to upstage her daughter North West’s recent performance in a live version of The Lion King.
The 43-year-old reality TV icon set off the controversy when she posted several photos of herself in a furry yellow coat and an oversize trapper hat — which was a dead ringer for her 10-year-old daughter’s costume when she performed on stage as Simba at the Hollywood Bowl in May.
North — whom Kim shares with her ex-husband Kanye West — was cast in a screening of The Lion King that featured live musical numbers synced to the iconic Disney animated film.
She sang as young Simba, and the show featured some of the original Lion King stars, including Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella.
Kim, who shared footage of herself and her younger daughter Chicago singing along with North at the show, was accused by several of her fans of trying to steal North’s moment after she posed for a photoshoot in the exact same style as one showcasing her daughter’s costume.
‘You couldn’t let your daughter have a moment u had to wear it too,’ wrote one infuriated user.
‘Why can’t she ever let anyone have their moment. Always wats to outdo the original [sic],’ another person commented on her Instagram post.
One person joked that North’s show-stopping role must have made Kim want a ‘part’ in The Lion King too.
Others took the fact that Kim posed in a similar outfit as North’s to claim that her daughter’s performance was ‘just a promotional stunt.’
A particularly annoyed poster tried to guess what might have been inside the Kardashians star’s mind.
‘”Let’s make it about me,”‘ they suggested.
North’s rendition of I Just Can’t Wait To Be King ended up going viral, and many social media users mocked the quality of her performance, while others assailed her as nothing more than an undeserving ‘nepo baby.’
One poster took North’s poorly reviewed performance as evidence that Kim had set it up for ‘business’ reasons.
‘So you didn’t care that your daughter couldn’t sing this was just business I assume,’ they wrote in the comments.
One fan suggested Kim would ‘upstage’ her daughter because she felt entitled to after she allegedly ‘bought the stage.’
One person claimed she had paid ‘to let’ North ‘have a moment,’ before snatching away said moment.
‘Thanks for ruining lion king,’ added a sarcastic user in the comments who seemed to suggest that installing North in the live performance had harmed the film.
Some fans even found Kim’s post and the controversy swirling around it in the comments to be darkly comical.
‘Okay but her wearing this after her daughter completely butchered the role of young Simba is just hilarious,’ wrote one troll.
In her latest photoshoot, Kim was dressed in a skintight pale yellow bodysuit, which contrasted with the baggier sweatsuit-like outfit that North wore.
The Kardashians star wore a matching furry yellow handbag and a similarly large trapper hat, along with furry leg warmers.
She also tried out variations on the outfit, including one in which she wore a large yellow fur coat in the same shade.
She posed in profile in a related look with a much shorter jacket that revealed her slim legs covered in white stockings.
She elevated her stature in slim, clear pumps, and the outfit was somewhat reminiscent of a furry enveloping look in animal print that her ex Kanye West’s current wife Bianca Censori wore during an impromptu photoshoot that the rapper invited photographers to in January.
Kim posed suggestively in other photos, including one in which she was lying on her stomach on her coat, as if it was a fur rug.
The influencer was seen with her raven roots popping out over her middle part, while the rest of her hair appeared to be bleached platinum.
Although Kim’s outfit was nearly identical to the one North wore in a photoshoot posted to her mother’s Instagram account, North wore a simpler, more stripped down costume at the Hollywood Bowl.
She had on a zip-up yellow hood with a more mane-like fuzzy hat, along with baggy shorts and fuzzy shoes, which was less complicated than the more opulent looks North was photographed in for social media.
