Controversy erupted after a Barcelona goal against Real Madrid was ruled out due to the lack of Goal-line technology.
In the early morning of April 22, Real Madrid welcomed Barcelona in the 256th Super Classic match, within the framework of round 32 of La Liga 2023/24.
A notable situation took place in the 28th minute, when Lamine Yamal had a skillful heel strike from Raphinha’s corner, and it seemed like the ball had gone into the net before goalkeeper Andrey Lunin could block it. VAR checked the shot from many different angles before disallowing the goal.
Ahead of the 2023/24 season, El Larguero newspaper revealed that La Liga will remain the only top European league not to apply Goal-line technology. The reason is because president Javier Tebas is said to have refused to pay 2.6 million pounds (3.2 million USD) – the amount needed to implement this technology.
After Barcelona fans criticized the La Liga president for his lack of goal-line, Tebas immediately took to X to respond, where he shared a series of old incidents where this goal-line technology was demonstrated is wrong. Tebas added the caption: “No comment.”
The Premier League was the first top European league to implement goal-line technology in 2014 – inspired by Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal against Germany in the 2010 World Cup.
Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A and Eredivisie soon followed the path of the English National League when adopting it in 2015.
In the end, Real Madrid won 3-2 against Barca after 90 minutes of official play, thereby reaching the La Liga championship with one hand as they are currently 11 points ahead of their “great rival” on the rankings.
